When they sat at the kitchen table, Ruchama put the plates of falafel in front of them, after having taken the slices of lemon when she’d eaten hers. She poured cold lemonade and Hilik downed it in one gulp. She filled his glass again and he downed it again and asked for more. Ruchama raised an eyebrow and asked, “Why are you both as red as beets?” Shlomi didn’t answer and Hilik only shrugged, blushing more and sending Shlomi terrified looks. “Did you take a hot shower?” she asked, and they nodded. Ruchama sighed, filled Hilik’s glass again, turned the fan towards them and said, “You must be completely crazy, at least get plenty to drink, the falafel is a little spicy today,” and she went downstairs to consult with Vardina about the following day’s catering job, or to scold her again for not telling her about the Polish empress, or to tell her she’d shattered the ugly jar.

In the quiet she’d left between them, Hilik said, “Now I’m afraid you’re going to make fun of me,” and Shlomi said, “Stop your nonsense, I won’t make fun of you because it isn’t funny,” and Hilik said, “I feel ashamed every time you look at me.”

Shlomi drank some lemonade and said, “You have nothing to be ashamed of, I wish I could teach you something.” He put the glass down and wiped the sweat that dripped from his head to his forehead. “I don’t understand it,” he said in a hoarse voice, “I’m a year older than you, I’m much taller, how could I have known nothing about this.”

“It’s really too bad,” said Hilik, “you missed out on a year of whacking off,” and he laughed as he pounced on his falafel, chewing voraciously, licking the tahini spilling from the pita, and added with his mouth full, “But you can make up for lost time now, do it in the morning and at night, you can even do it during lunchtime at the school bathroom, lots of kids do it, but if you ever tell anyone what I did I’ll kill you, and don’t you dare interrupt me or laugh at me if you can ever tell that I’m doing it, and don’t even dare say a word or even cough or you’ll ruin my fantasies, it’s my private thing.”

“All right, calm down already,” Shlomi said, “you’ll choke on your falafel. You have such an appetite all of a sudden.”

Hilik stopped chewing. “Why is your voice so hoarse?” he asked, and Shlomi said, “I don’t know, maybe because of the sand,” and Hilik smiled and said, “Maybe the chirping bird died.” Shlomi shrugged. “And why aren’t you eating?” Hilik asked. “You’ve got red eyes again, and some tears,” and Shlomi said, “She’s back.”

“Who?”

“Ella.”

“Yes, I know,” said Hilik.

“How? Did you see her?”

“No, but Vardina said they were coming back and she was helping them.”

“When?”

“A while ago.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I didn’t want you to get too excited, your whole body falls apart when you’re excited,” Hilik said and put the rest of the pita in his mouth.
